How to Use This Free Online Drum Sequencer

This simple tool lets you easily create drum loops and make beats directly in your web browser – no software installation needed. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Loading: When the page loads, please wait a few moments for the drum sounds and interface to initialize. You’ll see a “Loading…” message which will change to “Ready” when it’s set.
  2. The Grid:
    • The main grid represents one musical bar, divided into 16 steps. Each step corresponds to a 16th note in common 4/4 time.
    • Faint vertical lines divide the grid every 4 steps, helping you see the main beats (1, 2, 3, 4).
    • Each horizontal row is a different drum instrument, identified by its icon and name on the left.
  3. Creating Your Beat:
    • Click any square (step) in the grid to schedule that drum sound to play on that step. The step will light up (orange).
    • Click an already lit step again to turn it off (remove the note).
  4. Playback Controls (Top):
    • Play/Stop: Click the orange “Play” button to start your loop. Click “Stop” (it changes text) to stop playback.
    • Tempo: Drag the slider to change the speed of your beat, measured in Beats Per Minute (BPM).
    • Swing: Add a rhythmic “shuffle” or “groove”. Higher percentages delay the off-beat 16th notes (steps 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 within the bar), creating a less rigid feel common in hip-hop and jazz. 0% is straight timing.
    • Master Volume: Controls the final output volume of the entire drum mix.
  5. Mixing Your Drums (Left Panel):
    • Next to each drum icon and name, you have individual controls:
    • Icon: Visually identifies the drum sound.
    • Label: The name of the drum sound.
    • M (Mute): Click this button to temporarily silence only that drum track. It will turn red when muted. Click again to unmute.
    • X (Clear): Click this button to instantly erase all the steps you’ve programmed for only that specific drum row.
    • Volume Slider (%): Adjust the volume level of just that single drum sound within the mix.
  6. Exporting Your Loop:
    • Export Audio (WAV): Once you’re happy with your 16-step drum loop, click this button. Your browser will download a high-quality WAV audio file of your beat, perfect for importing into other music software or projects. (Note: MIDI export is planned for a future update).
